On 30 November 2024, Dr. Zubeda Dangor – representing the Nisaa Institute for Women’s Development and the National Shelter Movement of SA (NSMSA) – attended the launch of Tosunga Baninga’s “Change the Script” campaign, which focuses on challenging societal norms that perpetuate violence and fostering a culture of accountability.

The event, held as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, brought together activists, survivors, community leaders, and policymakers for a day of inspiration, critical conversation, and creative storytelling. There was an exhibition of survivor stories, a powerful screening of the South African film Dorpie, and an engaging panel discussion that delved into the roots of sexual gender-based violence and femicide (SGBVF) and the paths toward systemic change.

Surprise Award for NSMSA and Nisaa

A highlight of the event was a surprise award for Dr. Zubeda Dangor, the Nisaa Institute for Women’s Development and the National Shelter Movement of SA (NSMSA) in recognition impactful work, were celebrated by attendees as a beacon of hope in the ongoing fight against SGBVF. outstanding contributions to empowering survivors and challenging gender-based violence in South Africa.

Other Highlights:

  • Artistic Exhibition: Attendees explored a compelling showcase of survivor stories, amplifying voices that often go unheard.
  • Film Screening of Dorpie: The poignant film set in a small South African town captured the challenges faced by a community-run centre for survivors, sparking vital conversations about collective and systemic responses to SGBVF.

The Change the Script campaign is poised to have a lasting impact by fostering awareness, engaging communities, and encouraging accountability within the criminal justice system. By leveraging film and creative storytelling, the campaign seeks to inspire long-term cultural change and a more inclusive response to SGBVF across South Africa.
