Loss of a sister in the struggle against Violence Against Women

It is with a very heavy and sore heart that the National Shelter Movement of South Africa, mourns the passing of a long-standing Board Member Ms Fazila Gany after her long battle against COVID-19, on Wednesday the 27th of January 2021. As with her activism she fought hard too in this battle, sadly she didn’t make it this time round.

Our sister Fazila, has over the past decades worked on gender issues to address the inequalities faced by women and the plight of violence against women. She has contributed to shaping the gender landscape through her mentoring of others and her work in highlighting and responding to the inequalities.

Although she had a fighting spirit, Fazila was a gentle soul. She had a keen eye to detail and always made it a point to give of her time as best as she could towards contributing to the work of the National Shelter Movement of South Africa.

Fazila is survived by her parents, two daughters, daughter in law and grandchildren. May they all be granted peace & Jannah in Shaa Allah. We send them virtual hugs and support during this immensely difficult time. We also extend strength, love and condolences to the many who worked with Fazila in the different spaces that she worked on to address issues of inequality experienced by many people in our country.

Gone to soon, your insights and perspectives will be missed, you will be missed dearly our Sister. May your soul rest in peace and be united with your loved ones who have gone before you. We will continue the fight against inequalities in remembrance of your unflagging spirit. We will carry you with us always.

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)i am never without it (anywhere i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling)
here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

A memorial service will be held to honour Fazila’s life. Details to follow
